Passing on the Propane
Well, we decided to pass up the house that was heated with propane. It was otherwise the perfect house: perfect location, perfect size, perfect setting, perfect distance from both our jobs. But it was also at the upper edge of what we could afford, and the propane heat put it over the edge.
We seriously considered buying it and installing a geothermal exchange system for the house, but first we'd have to buy the house, and it would be entirely possible there wouldn't be room for the pipes, meaning we could be stuck with the propane heat forever. (After all the research I did into geothermal exchanges, however, I've become convinced it's the best way to go, and I'm going to lobby putting it into whatever house we do get, if there's room in the yard.)
It's a dreadful shame--we love the house. But it's more than we can afford.
