2200 words on THE IMPOSSIBLE CUBE today, plus a chunk of rewriting and a blog entry for Book View Cafe.  And laundry, and a roast for dinner, and a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and a trip to the arcade with the boys, and storytime for Mackie, and help with Sasha's computer, and cleaning the kitchen.

And now we're off to make the grocery list, since tomorrow we have grocery shopping, dentist appointments, a family appointment, and probably a trip to the barber, if we can sneak that in there.

Good thing there's no school tomorrow.

On Duty

Last night, I got  supper for the boys, then got Mackie into the car for a cub scout pack meeting. A woman from the local nature center was going to be there, and she brought a painted turtle and an owl to show.  Maksim alternated between bored and fascinated.  I sat in the back and graded my way through a tall pile of papers.

Back home, I continued my work on the papers, then recorded them.  Ah, the wild Friday night of a teacher.

Today . . . today was difficult.  Aran woke up with a fever, bad cough, and sore throat.  There was also a major blow-out with Sasha, which was no fun.  After bringing some semblance of order to the household, I took Aran to an urgent care clinic, fearing strep.  The doctor didn't find any, but Aran was wheezing badly--the infection was triggering asthma attacks--so they gave him a breathing treatment and medications.

Stopped at the store for stuff for Aran.   Called Aran's piano teacher to reschedule his lesson.

Got home and found Sasha had encountered serious trouble with the washing machine and dryer, which required considerable time to sort out.  Made Aran lunch, then ran down to the pharmacy to fill prescriptions.

By now I was happy to sit and wait twenty minutes for the medications because it meant I was alone and no one was making demands of me or asking me to solve problems.  When did sitting in pharmacy become a break?

Back home, threw together a batch of cookies and bread just in time to make supper.  Aran was still sick, so it was just me, Sasha, and Maksim at the table.

After supper, Sasha cleaned up and I hauled out the 2010 tax receipts for sorting and totally.  This needed to be done today because I wouldn't have time for it tomorrow or any subsequent weekends in January.  There were many, many receipts because in the past year I did a lot more travel and replaced a lot more equipment.  The trip to Ukraine also counts for research, so all those receipts had to be tallied.  (Good thing I converted the grivna to dollars on the spot for each one and wrote down what they all were in English.)  This took well over three hours.

Maksim needed a bedtime story.  Aran needed more meds.  Discovered someone had set the thermostat to 74 degrees, which explained why the house had been so warm the past couple of days.  Very upset.

Tomorrow is grocery shopping day, so I made out the menu for the following week and wrote out the shopping list.

Can I hire a maid now?

stevenpiziks: (Which Way?)
This has been a difficult week.  Tuesday I had to go into Ann Arbor for Aran's piano lesson and then drive home and make supper for everyone, oversee homework, deal with a number of kid issues, and suddenly it was time for bed.

Wednesday I lost my prep period when the department head descended on me over a big thing the English department is at loggerheads over so I had to stay after for an hour to get caught up.  After I came home, I had to oversee the boys, get supper, walk Aran through a difficult homework assignment, compose a long email to Mackie's teacher about his behavior--he hadn't taken his medication that morning and was a terror in school all day and she was wondering what the hell was going on--and then it was suddenly time for bed.

Today I had to drive to Ann Arbor to take Aran to his psychiatrist to get his medication renewed, drive home, make a late supper, discover that Sasha was behind on his work in two of his classes, force him to get caught up, clean the kitchen (which hadn't been done properly in three days), read and comment on the lesson plans for next week my student teacher emailed me, and try to catch up on the enormous pile of email in my inbox.

Today I also fielded more email from Mackie's teacher, who was worried about how poor his reading skills are and how difficult it is for him to concentrate in class, so I reluctantly tracked down the special education coordinator for his school and wrote a letter formally requesting that he be tested for special needs eligibility.  He's definitely ADHD, which is pretty much an automatic qualifier on a physical basis.  So it looks like I'm going to be a single dad raising =three= special needs kids.

Next week I have a staff meeting and yet another trip to Ann Arbor on Monday, Aran's piano lesson on Tuesday, a speaking engagement in Dearborn on Wednesday, and Aran's IEP =and= a meeting with Sasha's teachers on Thursday.

And oh yeah--I still have a book due December 1.

I'm tired and burned out and scared the hell out of my mind because I don't know how long I can keep this up.
