Berchte!

My favorite Mother Berchte moment came when the boys were still in middle and elementary school. Every year at Yule, we'd go around the house lighting candles to welcome back the light, and I would sneak outside to dive into my Berchte costume (old woman mask, blood-red cloak, boots). Berchte would pound on the door and the nervous boys would let her in for food and presents.

Although I was never around when Berchte arrived, the boys were never quite sure I was in the costume, even by the time Sasha and Aran got into middle school.

The first Yule after I got divorced, things became tricky. There was no other adult around to distract the boys while I changed. Also, the boys were growing increasingly convinced it was me, and I heard them making plans to watch the front door and the sliding door to see if I snuck out. So that year, I put the Berchte costume in my closet upstairs.

While the boys were lighting candles and watching the downstairs doors, I slipped upstairs, changed, and slipped back down, making it look like Berchte had suddenly appeared at the bottom of the steps.

Max let out a screech that brought Aran and Sasha running. "How did you get in?" Max demanded.

"I decided to try coming down the chimney like that other guy," Berchte responded in her gruff, gravelly voice.

"We don't have a chimney," Max protested.

"Oh." Berchte thought a moment. "You do now!"

Today Darwin and I revved up the Yuletide season, the first one in our new house! I baked a pile of piragi for our family gathering next weekend (including ones filled with Nutella and ones filled with raspberry, as well as the traditional ham) and some banana bread just because I could. Then we put up the tree and strewed the living room with lights and decorations. Afterward, thanks to the magic of streaming, we decided to watch SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN ("Put one foot in front of the other, and soon you are walkin' 'cross the floo-ooo-ooor!') and the George C. Scott version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which is the best one, in our opinion. It was a cozy day!

Today we put up the Yule tree and decorated the house. Dinah the Cat absolutely loves sitting under the tree and always parks herself there the moment we're finished. But this year . . .

This year, Dora the Meatloaf plunked herself down under the tree before Dinah could get there. Dinah was . . . miffed. She circled the tree, staring and glaring at Dora, who completely ignored her. She was upset, but not willing to drive the interloper away.

I shook the treat box, and Dora burst from under the tree like a blubbery explosion and screeched to a halt in the kitchen. Dinah, who doesn't really care much about treats, slid under the tree and pointedly took her spot.

Dora came back and whiffed in annoyance. But then she stalked behind the tree and took up residence in a different spot. Now the kitties are sharing.

Darwin and I were supposed to go to Ypsilanti for more research on Sunday, but a big weather system moved in.  HUGE STORM! the weather service shouted.  MANY INCHES OF SNOW! ONLY AN IDIOT WOULD GO OUTSIDE IN THIS!

So we nixed the trip and decided to decorate the house instead.

We got started just as the storm began in earnest, so we had the perfect Michigan combination of snow, pine boughs, lights, and decorations. Darwin got all dressed up:

Maksim figured out where the lights plugged in.

Aran took more photos.  He was also our designated top-of-the-tree decorator.

I had bought a pine garland and intended to use it as a runner for the dining room table, but it was way too long.  Darwin had another suggestion, and it came out beautifully:

In the end, it all turned out just lovely.  With the snow coming down outside and the lights on inside on the tree, everything felt soft and cozy.  I even made a batch of cookies (and started two other batches of treats that have to refrigerate overnight).

Dinah gave her stamp of approval.

Not long after that, my phone rang.  Snow day tomorrow!

We're ready!

Yule 2012

Yuletide 2012 passed pleasantly.  We had a big dinner of home-made chicken Kiev, a favorite of the boys.  And then it was time for the ritual in which we welcomed back the God and the light.  Mother Berchta arrived and announced that the presents were hidden in the magic chest in the living room (the cedar chest we use as a coffee table).  Maksim and Aran opened it up to see it filled with brightly wrapped packages and a rose on top to remind us that spring is always on its way.

Aran got a new dress shirt and a video game and the Three Stooges movie.  Maksim got a plastic, western-style shooting range toy (bought before the CT shooting, and I still don't know if I would get it for him again or not), a very soft blanket, and an Angry Birds shirt.  I got the way cool leather wristband (picture on Twitter) and a set of ear buds.

Then it was family time and much snacking and playing with toys, which is what Yuletide is for!

Today was the last day before winter break. Break comes inexplicably late this year. Our last day should have been Wednesday. We're back on January 3, so we don't even have two weeks.

At any rate, on the last day I always bring Corey in to play for my students.  They always enjoy this quite a lot, and Corey does too.  :)

Partway through the day, the snow arrived.  It was the first snowfall of the season.  Until now, we've had weather in the 40s every day, with occasional rain or even thunderstorms.  We got a decent amount, and the wind was blowing it everywhere.  It mixed with the water on the ground and froze, creating an icy crust on many surfaces.  At the end of the day, the principal came on the PA to warn everyone that the parking lot was slippery and to drive carefully.

I stayed after a bit, mostly to avoid the slippy-slidey traffic.  On the way home I stopped at Maksim's school to pick up some frogs.  His classroom has a small aquarium with two frogs in it, and Maksim was somehow chosen to take it home over break.  Except they wouldn't allow him to take the thing on the bus.  (Probably because some little jerk would snatch it away from him and try to break it or something.)  That meant I had to pick it up, which I did.  The frogs, both very tiny, are now sitting on the piano.  No doubt the ride to my house gave them some kind of froggy freakout, but you wouldn't know it to look at them.

And then it was time to prep for Yuletide!

Last weekend was decoration time!  It was the first time decorating in the new place.  It was Aran's turn to accompany me to the grocery store, and on the way home, we stopped at a tree place and picked out a tree.  There's a little alcove near the front door which is perfect for a Yule tree, especially if the tree is tall and narrow.  It doesn't take over the whole living room, and at take-down time, the tree is only a few steps from the front door, minimalizing needleness.  Perfect!

All four of us got out the decorations (handily located in the enormous front hall closet--I think I like not having a basement) and set to work.  Sasha streamed Ukrainian Christmas music through the computer.  Mackie set up the Charlie Brown stuff on one of the bookshelves, and Sasha handled the Goddess creche, and Aran sorted.  The tree went up without a hitch, and the decorations looked loverly as ever.

Over Thanksgiving weekend I bought some weighted stocking hooks.  They perch on atop a shelve or alcove while the hook hangs below for the stocking.  The top part is heavy so as to keep the stocking from pulling everything down.  I got silvery ones shaped like letters: an M, A, S, and D.  There's a little shelf at the turn in the staircase, and we put the stockings there.  It looks pretty cool!

And now we're ready for Yule!
